This was taken during the Albuquerque Biopark's "Love Bugs Tour," a special event this past weekend where we were given a tour of the "Bugarium Rearing Laboratory" by chief entomologist Dr. Ralph Charlton. He told us all about bug sex.

Dr. Charlton managed to get these two tarantulas to mate on command for us. This is basically what it looks like.

The female is trying to eat the male, and he is using special protrusions on his forward legs to keep her fangs from impaling his head while some of his other appendages do the necessary work.
